45Z in plain English · June 2026 policy update

Cleaner fuel can be worth millions. Proving it is the real product.

Learn who receives the 45Z credit, how carbon intensity changes the math, where growers fit, and which evidence turns a promising estimate into defensible value.

The part growers are rarely told

The IRS pays the fuel producer. A grower captures value only when evidence and a commercial agreement connect the farm to the claim.

What is 45Z, actually?

A federal income-tax credit for making cleaner transportation fuel in the United States and selling it in a qualifying transaction.

It applies to eligible fuel produced after 2024 and sold by the end of 2029. The cleaner the fuel’s full lifecycle emissions, the larger the potential credit per qualifying gallon or gasoline-gallon equivalent.

The useful takeaway

45Z rewards the fuel producer—not the carbon practice by itself.

TerraValue opportunity thesis

Yes—there is a business here.

The best entry point is one layer before tax filing: show where value may exist, then organize the evidence needed to defend it. That is close to TerraValue’s core and avoids competing with tax counsel or DOE’s official model.

The 45Z Readiness & Value Map

01

Size the opportunity

Model pathway, volume, rate, CI band, and scenario range.

02

Locate the blockers

Separate potential value from registration, sale, PWA, origin, and model gaps.

03

Map value ownership

Show who creates the CI improvement, who claims the credit, and where contracts must bridge them.

Business-model concepts are TerraValue product hypotheses, not statements of tax eligibility or expected revenue. Tax positions should be reviewed by qualified counsel.
